Sleeper - Inbetweener
Today’s purchase - Different For Girls by Louise Wener
For me, the mid 90s were all about female fronted bands with cool haircuts. The kind who found themselves repeatedly being labelled as, “opinionated” or “outspoken” by the media. Bands who wrote seriously catchy tunes, coupled with intelligent lyrics and a “fuck you” mentality as an added bonus. Sleeper were no exception of course, in fact Louise remained an easy target throughout her career as far as the British press were concerned. But to hell with all that nonsense!. They meant an awful lot to me back then, and just so happened to be the first band I ever saw live. The following year I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Wener after I decided to sneak out of my work experience placement, and dash to a record signing with my best friend. I emulated her in every way possible. The hairdo being the number one thing to accomplish, the second, purchasing an electric guitar.
In any case, last week I discovered a recent interview with Ms. Wener where she briefly mentioned this book. Now at 45 she’s all mumsy, and it kinda makes me feel a little bit mumsy too. But she’s still the same softly spoken, polite, and charming lady she was way back in the days. And I seriously can’t wait to delve into this potentially awesome book of memoirs. Ms. Wener, I still love you.
